Turn Off Your HVAC System
The very first step when installing a smart thermostat is to turn off the power to your thermostat. While the wires going to your thermostat are very low voltage and will not cause you any physical harm, you can damage your HVAC system if live wires end up touching one another. When you’re at your panel box, make sure that you check all of the breakers to ensure that you’re shutting them off for your entire HVAC system. Some homes may have multiple breakers, while others may only have one.
Start Disassembling Your Old Thermostat
Next, pop off the faceplate of your existing thermostat. Most of these are held in by compression and will come right off when you push in on their sides. Take a picture of the wiring at your thermostat so that you understand how to hook it back up when installing your new smart thermostat. Then remove the wiring and unscrew the backplate from the wall.
Assemble & Install Your Smart Thermostat
Grab the backplate for your new smart thermostat and hold it up to the wall. You’ll need to screw it in securely to a stud or use screw anchors. Pull out the picture you took and reconnect all the wiring the same way. Next, pop on the new faceplate for your smart thermostat. Lastly, turn the power at your breakers back on, and your smart thermostat should start automatically.
